The
two Engabu Za Tooro cultural practitioners Zebidayo Mwesige Abbooki (Kaserebe Mukwikwi),
a folklore artist and Stephen Mugabo Abbooki (Kijegere), a ritual guide who
wereattending the UNESCO global meeting in Mauritius to showcase Empaako
heritage to the world will be officially welcomed to Fort Portal on Sunday, 9th
December 2018 at KoiKoi Cultural Centre in Fort Portal.
They
will arrive at Mpanga Market, Fort Portal at 01:00pm and will be escorted in a
procession led by Engabu Za Tooro Brass Band to KoiKoi Cultural Centre in Fort
Portal where the gates will be opened at 03:00pm.
At
KoiKoi, the two Engabu Za Tooro cultural practitioners will showcase their
experience in Mauritius in traditional African Folklore, drama and traditional
Runyege dance.
Mukwikwi
and Kijegere who are currently living in Entebbe town, arrived on 2nd
December, 2018 and have been busy practicing and preparing traditional folklore
skits and drama which will be performed on Sunday 9th December 2018
at KoKoi.
The
two Engabu Za Tooro cultural performers have also been busy around Entebbe and
Kampala areas attending gigs where they have especially been invited by people
from Empaako communities like the Banyoro, Batooro, Basongora, Banyabindi,
Batagwenda and Batuku to showcase Empaako naming rituals and perform
traditional Runyege dance and Runyoro – Rutooro folklore.

Apart
from Engabu Za Tooro cultural artists who will include among others Kijegere,
Mukwikwi and Kajuguta. Master Kalenzi who is popularly known for his ‘Obunyamahunde’ and ‘Busongora Bwa Koogere’ songs and Ayesiga who is popularly known
for his ‘Ihunde Lyange’ song will
also be performing on 9th December, 2018 at KoiKoi Cultural Centre
in Fort Portal,.
The
head of Engabu Za Tooro delegation who is also Engabu Za Tooro Executive
Director, Stephen Rwagweri Atwoki who presented the Empaako safeguarding
technical report in the UNESCO’s 13th session of Intergovernmental Committee
for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage will also officially give a
report on Empaako safeguarding and revitalization which was submitted to UNESCO
in Mauritius and approved.
Entrance
fee for adults will only be UGX 3,000 and children will pay UGX 1,000 only and
the show will run from 03:00pm to 10:00pm.

The
one week UNESCO global meeting took place at Swami Vivekananda International
Convention Centre (SVCC) in Port Louis in the Republic of Mauritius from 26th
November to 1st December 2018.
Currently,
Engabu Za Tooro is implementing a UNESCO co-funded Project UGA 01210 which is
on documentation and revitalization of Empaako naming rituals and practices.
